It’s that time of the year again! Poinsettias are all around us. They are a beautiful plant that add a splash of color around the holiday season. Euphorbia pulcherrima or Poinsettia as it’s commonly known are native to Mexico where they are a winter flowering plant. A Mexican legend tells of a girl who could only offer weeds as a gift on Christmas Eve. When she brought the weeds into a church, they blossomed into the beautiful red plants we now know as poinsettias and are known as flowers of the holy night in Mexico.
Poinsettia Care
Poinsettia likes to be consistently moist. When the top of the soil is dry to touch, it’s time to water. As they like to be consistently moist they are at a higher risk of root rot, ensure your poinsettia is in a pot with drainage holes and remove excess water after watering.
Feed your poinsettia with a low dose fertilizer weekly to keep it looking its best.
They like very bright but indirect light. They can tolerate a few hours of morning sun but avoid harsh afternoon sun.
Poinsettias can also live outdoors over the holiday season here in the UAE. Find them a nice shaded location away from strong drafts. They will do well with some morning sun. Outdoors they may need daily watering but always check the soil before watering your plant.
Problems
Leaf drop is a common problem. This can be due to under watering or overwatering. It can also be due to its location, they are particularly sensitive to drafts, try to place them away from open windows or air conditioning vents.
Toxicity of Poinsettia
These plants are mildly toxic when ingested by children or pets. They can cause gastrointestinal upset and irritation.
